Create iPhone Ringtones from your iTunes Library

iTunes

iTunes

My friend sent me these directions on how to create ringtones for your iPhone right from your iTunes library.  This will only work with songs you ripped to iTunes, or the 256kps DRM free downloads.  If you have DRM songs you can burn them to a CD, and then re-import them into iTunes.

1. In iTunes, right-click the song you want, go to ‘Get Info’ and change the start and end points so it’s 30 seconds in length.

2. Verify that your Encoder in Import Using is set to AAC.  You can set the quality to any setting you chose.  I prefer the 256 kbps setting.

3. Right-click the song again, ‘convert selection to AAC’.

4. Find this new file or drag it from iTunes to your desktop.

5. Rename the file extension from .m4a to .m4r.

6. Import it back into iTunes and it will appear as a ringtone. Tada!

Now the song will be placed in your ringtones folder.  You can delete the .m4a converted track from iTunes now, so that you don’t have the thirty second track on your album.

3G iPhone

prod-hero-blackI am so excited about all the great new features that are coming in the 3G iPhone.  However, there are few things that I would have liked to have seen in this release of the iPhone.  I am very happy that the iPhone is 3G.  I checked AT&T’s coverage map, and I am in the coverage area.  From what I understand there are still some areas that have not been upgraded to support 3G.  AT&T said that they are still upgrading their equipment.  But, don’t fret the new iPhone still will support the EDGE network.  The new iPhone will have Wi-Fi, so if you are next to an access point you will have a faster than EDGE speed connection.

Next on the list is GPS, unfortunately, it is Assisted GPS.  This means that it can rely on cell towers and WiFi access points if needed.  What I am not to clear on is that the iPhone does not support turn-by-turn directions, but it has tracking capabilities.  I’ve heard that Tom-Tom wanted to write an app for the iPhone; consequently, the iPhone SDK states that there cannot be turn-by-turn software for the GPS.  Lets hope that changes really soon.  Maybe Apple wants to stay away from being sued if the person is somehow injured using the GPS.

Apple is now selling the iPhone subsidized.  This means that when you sign your two year contract with AT&T they are paying for a portion of the phone.  The iPhone is $200.00 less than the first generation iPhone.  Apple is no longer receiving a cut of the monthly service plan.  Apple wants to get the iPhone into more hands, and this is a smart move on their part.  AT&T is actually loosing money on every sale. but they are hoping to make up the loss in the subscriptions.

The App Store is finally here.  Now you can have locally running apps on your iPhone.  There are going to be several Apps available at launch, some will be free, and others will have a cost.  There are games for the iPhone as well.  A few of them were demoed at WWDC, and they look outstanding.  I would say that they are as good or even better than the Sony PSP.

Now for the things that I would have liked to have seen on the new iPhone.  I would have liked cut and paste as a feature.  I only hope that it will be in the next release.  I have been using an iPod Touch, and I would find this feature invaluable.  The other thing I wanted to see on the 3G iPhone was a front facing camera for video conferencing.  I saw the screenshots before the WWDC, and I was disappointed that they were only Photoshopped images.

Finally, I was 99.9% certain that Apple would introduce a 32GB iPhone.  It would only be logical to release a larger capacity iPhone with the introduction of the Apps Store.  Well, to my dismay they did not release the 32GB version.  I guess I will just have to be froogle about what I put on the new iPhone.  With my luck in two or three months Apple will release the 32GB iPhone.  I know, I know, I am an early adopter, and this is the price we pay to be the first to get the latest gadgets.

Overall, I am very happy with the features that will be coming out on the new iPhone, and I can’t wait till it’s here.  There are eleven days left till the iPhone 3G is here, and counting.

iPhone Release Date CONFIRMED!!!

wwdc08According to the ars technica article I just read; they state that the 3G iPhone has been confirmed for a release date of June 9th at WWDC. This is supposed to happen right after the announcement. Here’s the clincher though. They go on to site the Gizmodo article that I sited in my post earlier this morning. So, at this point I would take this announcement with a grain of salt. I will update my blog as soon as I hear any other news on the release date.

Latest 3G iPhone Rumor

prod-iphoneAs WWDC approaches the iPhone rumor mill will run a muck. So far we have heard that the new iPhone will be 3G, it will have GPS, oh and it will also drive your car for you. I am kidding about the last statement, but I would not be surprised if that was a rumor as well. This morning I read a Gizmodo article stating a “source very close to the 3G iPhone launch”, said that the iPhone will be announced on June 9th at WWDC. And, that it will be available “worldwide” right after the launch. The prominent rumor is that it will be announced at WWDC, but as far a launch time it has been varying by rumor.

The other rumor which I hope is true, is the subsidization of the iPhone by the carrier. I had posted this on my blog about three weeks ago. According to the Fortune Blog AT&T would subsidize the iPhone by $200.00 when you sign a two year contract. The Gizmodo article also states that the iPhone will not be sold at a fixed price point. As to what exactly this means the article was fairly vague. I guess what they are probably taking about is carrier subsidization. Or, Apple might be releasing more than one iPhone model. This to is another rumor cycling through the rumor mill.

Well until June 9th, all we can do is hope that the rumors are true. If they are this is going to be a great iPhone. Even if some of the rumors are not true, I still think the iPhone will do very well.

When Do You Think the New iPhone Will be Released???

prod-iphoneAfter reading the various news articles that the iPhone is unavailable at the online Apple Store, I decided to take a look for myself. Sure enough, it is showing as currently not available. But, when I went to the AT&T web site it is showing that it can be purchased. I also called around to some of the local Apple Stores, and they said that they are out of both the 8GB and 16GB iPhones. With the iPhone not being available everyone, is thinking that the iPhone will be released this month. At this point it’s anyones guess as to when the new iPhone is going to be released. I personally think it’s still in June. While I have read that it might be this week, or even next week. It’s all rumor and no concrete evidence.

I would like to know what you the reader thinks the new iPhone will be released. So, drop a line in the comments section, or you can visit my facebook page by clikcing the tab above, or the link to the right. I have started a new discussion thread on this subject.

Breaking iPhone News

prod-iphoneThis just in… AT&T is going to subisdize the second generation 3G iPhone. Yes, you are reading this correctly. According to a Fortune Blog on CNNMoney.com, AT&T will be subsidizing $200.00 of the 3G iPhone with a 2-year contract. This means you can purchase the 8GB iPhone for $199.00, and the 16GB iPhone for $299.00. “Both Apple and AT&T declined to comment”, according to the Fortune Blog. The new iPhone will have true GPS, and not cell phone triangulation technology. The iPhone will also be thinner than the current version. Up until now everyone has been stating that the new iPhone will actually be thicker than the current one. I guess we will have to wait and see. Finally, according to the anonymous source that Fortune spoke with; they said that the new iPhone will be released on or around June 27th. This is approximately the one year anniversary of the iPhone launch.

I guess AT&T is hoping to lure customers away from their current cell phone providers with these new contract terms. For me personally, my contract is up in August, so switching for me will not be that long of a wait. The only caveat is that you have to buy the phone from an AT&T Store, and not the Apple Store to receive the subsidized cost. Maybe by the time the iPhone launches they will allow you to buy subsidized iPhones from the Apple Store.

As for the models of the new iPhones, I believe Apple will introduce a 32GB model. If they don’t do it at launch time they probably will do it sometime before the end of the year. Again this is my opinion and not fact. I just hope my opinion is correct. With all of the new 3rd party apps that are going to be available to be installed on the iPhone; it would only be logical that Apple would produce a larger capacity iPhone.

iPhone 2 Cometh Sooner than Later

apple-logo2The past few days everyone has been speculating as to when the new iPhone will come out, and what new features the iPhone will posses. I personally can’t wait for it to come out. My contract with T-Mobile is up in August, and guess who’s switching to AT&T. I have read speculation that the iPhone will be coming out sooner than later. This is based on the current shortage of iPhones at the Apple Stores around the country. This is not uncommon when Apple is ready to update a product they start ramping down production of the current item. As to what new features the iPhone will have is anyone’s guess right now. The only thing we can be certain about at this point is that the phone will have 3G technology. I am hoping for copy and paste myself. I currently have an iPod Touch, and copy and paste would be a great feature to have.
